BB Formatting - Quoting a Previous Post

Postby commnthings » Mon Jul 06, 2009 12:04 pm

I've been active here for the past six months or so and routinely see a topic quote sections from a previous post. The quoted segment is shown in a gray box as shown below. Where I need help is "How do you quote something so that it will show up that way? I've looked at the FAQ page (faq.php) but can find nothing to explain this. When I read a post I see a small "Quote" button but its usage is not at all clear. I've tried to use it but when I submit my topic I only see the BBCode surrounding the quoted section.

Can someone "please, please, please" give me a 30 second tutorial on "Quoting"?

Many thanks,

Bob

Hi Bob,

Anything that you put between the [quote] [/quote] tags will appear in that special box that you described. If I wanted to quote a particular user, say yourself for example, then I would use these tags but add your username in double quotes after an equals symbol. It would look like this: [quote="commnthings"]

Whenever you are replying to a thread, it's possible to scroll-down and see previous posts. You will find a special quote button on each of the posts, which will do all the relevant BBcode for you.

I hope that helps.

Regards,

Steven.

    What stavro describes is correct.

And there's a rather simple automatic way too. Just the Quote button to the upper left of a post.

That automatically wraps the contents of the entire post in [ quote] [ /quote] tags for you, including the author's name. This is still a good starting point, even if ultimately you wish to quote less than the entire post, because you can delete words, sentences or paragraphs. Takes a little practice to get it right ... and there is a limit of one quote and two sub-quotes.

Also, anything entered outside the Quote tags will appear outside the shaded Quote box(es).

Also, as you pointed out, there are lots of forum tips and FAQs at the following link, but surprisingly no explanation about quoting:

One last tip. There is a quote button directly above the message window.

This will automatically insert a pair of quote tags in a message.

If I press the button with no selection it enters a pair like this: [ quote][/quote]

... it produces a blank box unless I type between the tags:

If I press the quote button with some text selected, it wraps the text with quote tags. So if I have abc selected I get:
    abc

If I want to quote someone by name, saying abc, I enter add "=soAndso" after the word "quote" in the opening tag only. This [ quote="soAndso"]abc[/quote] produces:

    soAndso wrote:abc

OK, I had tried that and it didn't work. Then I went back to my profile and found that BBCode was disabled. Now all is ticketyboo (as the Canadians might say).

Thanks to all,

Bob

Never would have occurred to me to suggest checking profile settings!

Ticketyboo is good, right? (I see a quote box is your reply!)
